Art Music in Greece: An Interesting Field with a Promising Future Views and Expectations for the Future of Opera and Classical Music

— Nationwide survey by Focus Bari in collaboration with ELPE —

Focus Bari, in collaboration with the Association of Greek Opera Leading Actors (ELPE), conducted a nationwide survey on the public’s attitudes and expectations regarding art music in Greece. The results were presented at the workshop “Marketing in Opera,” which took place on June 17, 2026, and was hosted at the premises of the Union of Journalists and Magazine Publishers (EDIPT).

The survey highlights significant opportunities for expanding the audience for opera and classical music.

Key findings of the survey:

Clear predisposition and significant potential for engagement
Nearly three out of five Greeks (57%) constitute a positive or potential audience for opera and classical music, representing a significant audience pool that is waiting for the right incentives and more accessible experiences to bring them closer to the world of opera and classical music.

Strong Confidence and Demand for a Greater Presence of Greek Opera Stars
64% of respondents believe that the country has opera artists on par with their international counterparts, while 56% would like to see Greek opera artists more often in leading roles and major productions. These findings highlight the audience’s emotional connection to the art form, while also providing a clear foundation for further promoting domestic artistic talent.

Interest has not yet translated into attendance
Despite the genre’s popularity, two out of three Greeks (67%) have not recently attended an opera or classical music performance. The gap between interest and actual participation underscores the need to build more bridges to the public.

Strategic Transition: From an “Experience for the Few” to a Modern Cultural Outlet

The public identifies education and exposure from an early age, affordable and decentralized access to performances and concerts, as well as modern, outward-looking, and interactive communication—without compromising the artistic value of the genre—as the key pillars of this transition.
